Web Site Change Log
Welcome to the editor's log. This is the tool I (Shane) use to communicate changes with my boss (Dale). I've made it available to the public for interest only. If you visit this page regularly you may need psychological help ; )
Notes / In Progress
- Discovered another issue with respect to Google on ranking. Because of the layers of frames used by SoloChristo.com, Google isn't able to follow the threads using its catalogue method. Also, using the other option of creating a site map won't work with the layers of frames. There is a workaround! I have created a sitemap readable by Google (and others).
- Currently reworking standard article format to make it more search engine friendly and readable in different resolutions. Is taking a bit of re-work. See http://www.solochristo.com/Draft/blankarticle_std.html
- Currently restoring 'Articles' section: Revival.
- Completed 'Articles' Sections: God, The Bible, Semper Reformata, Sovereignty & Salvation, The Gospel, Evangelism & Missions, NCT.
- Need to restore the Hartley article, "Christian Obedience" (will first read to see if suitable - once remaining sections of site are restored).
- Articles from orginal site I can't find so far:
- What is Calvinism? Is it Biblical? ~ Dean Olive
- Some items to discuss:
- Graphics: I'm intersted in how you developed the graphics across frames! Awesome work!!
- How does the bookshop work?
- My father-in-law, who is a Latin Scholar among other things, wrote to me suggesting we change 'Semper Reformata' (Always Reformed) to 'Semper Reformanda' (Always Reforming). What do you think?
January to March 2007
- Placed SoloChristo into a simpler html format (for about 4 months) to increase indexing chances. Didn't work - Google seems to react to the frames even when they aren't the main part of the site. Also tried their map programs. Didn't work.
- Rearranged some files to make structure simpler.
- I've re-written the frames code and nested site menus to increase the chances of indexing. Placed html menus within the following files to make it easier for Google to index: SoloChrist.htm (within non-frames section), title, theologyindex, menu, intro, header, home. Should work - we'll see.
November / December 2006
- Added www.solochristo.com to Google Analytics.
- I've rewritten my javascript redirect code into PHP. This was the code that redirected to the relevant file depending on the domain. Eg. solochristo.com --> SoloChristo.htm, treasuringchrist.com --> TCCC.htm. The Google search spider/crawler gives ranking pentalties for redirects. However, it doesn't matter when written in PHP (as PHP code executes at the Server end wheras Javascript executes at the user end). When written in PHP the spider doesn't see the redirect.
In other words, I think I've fixed our main ranking problem. We'll see over the next few months.
We get a lot of traffic from Yahoo but very little from Google. This is one step towards correcting this problem.
- Got the ok to post SL book to SC when IDS do.
- Placed each chapter of Steve's book into pdf format. (Also need to put it into html format which will take a lot more work).
June to Sept 2006
- Added IDS advert for SL book to front page.
- Got the ok to post SL book to SC when IDS do.
- Added GBI link to menu.
- Added Editor's Log to lower menu.
May 2006
April 2006
- Changed the return date on the front page. Hopefully be back ahead of revised date (end May).
- NCT Section Completed - links restored and/or articles copied from web archive.
- Semper Reformata completed - links restored and/or articles copied from web archive.
- Added a message option to the article template. By changing one or two variables in the single "DefaultVariables.js" file you can add a message to the top and/or bottom of every single article in the new format. This is really cool! For example, we can broadcast the release of a new book across every article. Or, other brief news events. You can include links also. (You can leave the variables blank for no message at all as the norm).
- Finished the template!!! See "Standard Article" or "Site (use temp link)" left to see article format.
- Semper Reformata
- Index - "VI. B. e Pastoral Eldership" is missing in the document body. I removed the index sub-heading. (Note: I later found the Pastoral Eldership section developed in a draft (incomplete) and unlinked file. I moved it to "/Draft/Reformation/" - we can add it later when you're ready. I haven't deleted anything. If items were incomplete or not linked I moved it to "/Draft/Old/From Original SoloChristo_Not Linked/".
- Added "NewAdditions" to log menu. (Not yet added all the new additions to list - will get to that.) We can add this once the site is developed further. Instead of advising the domain bank additions here, I'll just add items to the "New Additions" page so I don't double up the work. However, not all items added to Treasuring Christ will be linked into Solo Christo (and visa-versa). But most will and I'll list everything in "New Additions" so a record of the domain bank additions will be kept. I think this will be the easiest way even though you might not be sure if an items has been linked. Also, I think it will be quicker and easier to just list the article without placing the section since there will be link anyway. I hope this is alright (the search option will enable people to find it).

- Aside:
- Interesting links!: see
- Relocated development files, templates and drafts to a seperate "Drafts" folder in the root directory. Makes it easier to manage (especially for broken link reports).
- Fixed the problem of question marks throughout documents. (Note, this was a problem right across the site not just with the hymns!!). Need to use Special html characters in some cases. (See http://www.tedmontgomery.com/tutorial/HTMLchrc.html). Standard quotes (") and apostrophe's (') are fine. However, the server appears to have trouble with angled apostrophe's ( ' ) and quotes ( " ). Let me know regarding any uploads you notice the problem with.
- Fixed repeat play of hymns in latest edition of Microsoft Internet Explorer. Found code issue and corrected. (Latest IE kept playing the hymn tunes in an infinite loop. Firefox and Netscape are fine).
- Increased standard width from 150 to 300 for midi player plug-in. My plug-in didn't show enough to be of use. Width of 300 should be fine for all.
- All links to 'gospelcom.net' fixed and changed references to 'biblegateway.com'.
- All links to 'newcovenant.ws' fixed and changed to articles posted on 'ncbf.net'.
- Re-arranged all root directory files into "_SC".
Note:
- Underscore folders represent site specific folder, etc.
- Standard files (no underscore) represent 'resource bank' folders.
- All other folders in original location relative to domain root folder. i.e. Links from other sites to Articles, etc will work now.
- Had to rename "index.htm" to "SoloChristo.htm". "index.htm" is reserved and needs to be used to run a java script to direct the web surfer to the correct file depending on the domain name (solochristo vs treasuringchrist). **Please leave in place relative links within site to index.htm - it will still work on the web site - I can send a replacement 'index.htm' file for your PC to simulate what is happening on the web**.
- Added editors log for easy viewing (also reduces need for multiple emailing).
- Set up temporary email - have a look at the emails - will be of interest to you
(Joseph Krygier and Neil Witcombe
send their regards):
- Goto: mail.solochristo.com (note: no "www").
- Email: hobbes (need to input full email address).
- Password: ****** (note: case sensitive password).
- Added broken links report to log. Obtained broken links testing software - good quality and free. (Dreamweaver only tests one page at a time - painful!).
- Added site search bar at the bottom of the home page & articles page.
(This will work when we go live at which time we'll also submit the site afresh to Google so their search engine links are all updated. Also gives us brownie points with Google with respect to site ranking. )
- Removed front page sentence, "Best when viewed with. . . ".
Additions to Resource Bank (not directly linked in site):
- Added to resource bank the folders: Audio, Biography, eTreasure, Quotes and Templates.
- Some material only added to Audio (some sermons and talks). (May delay upload for larger files).
Upload: Feb 2006
Additions to Resource Bank (not directly linked):
- theology\nct\Moral_Law.pdf (Original article by Mike Adams – linked only via Table Talk article – link in article will work when we have the domain.)
Changes / Corrections:
-
Removed home page Java Applets (menu items). Rewrote code in standard html to perform the same tasks with the same look and feel! [Feeling rather pleased with myself having achieved this : ) ] Home page opens a lot faster now with no need for any extra Java code on your PC!! (Note: Java is different to JavaScript which has become standard code; Java is not as common as it used to be.)
-
/theology/tabletalksept2002.htm - Footnote 1. Link no longer to correct location. Corrected footnote appropriately (linked to Moral_Law.pdf).
-
Added a line break to the intro text – I think it reads better.
